I know it has been almost a weeks since the Angels traded for Vernon Wells, but I still can't get over the $86 milion left on his contract and I know I am not alone. That $86 million just seems like such a mind boggling number that I just can't put it out of my mind. Anytime I think about it, all I can think of is all of the other ways that much money could have been spent. Hopefully I can have my fun with this now and get it out of my system so I can stop dwelling on this mountain of money the Angels just committed to their new left fielder.
OK, maybe swimming in the money would have been a worse way for the Angels to use $86 million.

The Vernon Wells trade may seem like a failure to the general public, but if you ask Tony Reagins, he probably views the deal as a smashing success because of all the bullet points it knocks off his post-season checklist:
Big splash? Check, even if the splash made everyone wet and uncomfortable.
Big bat? Check, assuming Wells doesn't continue his trend of alternating good and bad seasons.
Find a new left fielder who can actually field? Check, or at least we hope so.
Show that Arte Moreno is willing to spend big money? Check, check and then check about 86 million more times.
Acquiring a leadoff hitter so the revamped middle of the order actually has somebody to drive in? Ummmm... oh, crap. I knew we forgot something. D'oh!!!
Another painful year of Aybar manning the leadoff spot? Say it ain't so!!!

Memo to Mike Scioscia, if you want to do your part and help this Vernon Wells trade look like something less than a total disaster, then you have absolutely no choice but to give significant playing time to Hank Conger and NOT Jeff Mathis. We all know you have an inexplicable and unhealthy mancruch on Mathis, but making Conger your primary catcher is not only a good idea, but a moral imperative. Don't believe me? Allow me to explain...
Ready or not, Hank, your time is now... or at least it should be.
It is time for another Twitter Trend Tuesday and this one is going to be a little different. Normally, I like to come up with the trending topic, but the good folks at the MLB Network have taken care of it for me with their recent announcement via Twitter that we fans get to ask questions of our beloved GM Tony Reagins on their FrontBurner segment.
This trending topic really could go either way as an Angel fan. One could take MLB Network up on their offer and ask some well-meaning and insightful questions for them to put to Reagins, or, if one were so inclined, they could hijack this #FrontBurner hashtag and see to it that Mr. Reagins gets to see everything we are all really thinking.
Here are a few sample tweet questions to get those of us with questionable intentions off and running:
Hey, Reagins! Can you please put away the Panic Trade button before you do something else disastrous? #FrontBurner
Hey, Reagins! Were you drunk, stoned or both when you decided to make the Wells trade? #FrontBurner
Hey, Reagins! Did you just feel bad about ripping off AZ in the Haren trade and make the Wells deal to balance out your karma? #FrontBurner
Hey, Reagins! What does $86 million buy you? An overpaid OF for your team and a pink slip for yourself when the season is over. #FrontBurner
I'll be tweeting more throughout the day, so follow me or just do a search on the hashtag to follow along with the fun. I'll post some of the best contributions to the trending topic at the end of the day, so if you have something good, you get to be featured on the blog (which I am sure would be the highlight of your life).
