Game Recap - 9/26/12: Save the drama - Angels 4, Mariners 3
There's only seven games left in the season, right? Good, because I don't think my heart can take much more of this and that is before we even try and factor in the cardiac arrest-inducing tightrope walk that is a standard C.J. Wilson.
Leave it to the Angels to mix in some drama in what was almost a must-win game considering that the Orioles and Athletics (and the Rays too, who remain one game back of the Halos, as if this Wild Card race wasn't complicated enough) won earlier in the evening. Hopefully this game turns out to be a metaphor for how the Angels' season plays out. Trailing until the end before overtaking their opposition in the last minute. Yeah, sounds about right.
Game Notes
-- Let us all stand in awe of Torii Hunter. Not only did he come up with the game-tying RBI and the game-winning RBI, but he did both with two outs. Talk about raising the degree of difficulty.
-- Even though the Angels didn't gain any ground, I can't overstate how huge this win was just on its own merits. Having the Angels coldest pitcher go up against King Felix was a match-up that I think we probably all chalked up as a very likely loss. In that respect, they didn't gain ground in the standings, but they kind of did in the grand scheme of things since this is one expected loss that never came to pass. Now, let's see if the Halos can do it again when the same pitchers square off in Seattle on Monday.

Wait, "Get this man a new contract now?" Are misfiring neurons in your hipocamppus preventing the conversion from short-term into long-term memory? Remember the ill-fated summer of '10? Remember his career stats? Remember his AGE? The summer of '12 is an outlier, dude has never hit .300 in his career. He could easily become Chone Figgins next year. Heck, he could fall off a cliff tonight and become Chone Figgins THIS year.
OK, money wasn't mentioned. Years weren't mentioned. Wells' status wasn't mentioned. Starter/backup status wasn't mentioned. If he wants to come back cheap and as a backup for one season it might work. To me, it can't be at the expense of a young player's development.
Besides, I've waited five years to use that neuron line from Big Bang Theory in context.
