Halo Headlines: Trout snubbed for Gold Glove, Santana hires new agent, expect Angels trades soon

Written by Garrett Wilson on .

The October 31st, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Trout snubbed for Gold Glove, Santana hires new agent, expect Angels trades soon and much more...

The Story: Mike Trout was snubbed for a Gold Glove.

The Monkey Says: Trout losing to Adam Jones is pretty shocking.  Jones is a good fielder, but not a great one.  He didn't even have a particularly good year by any measure or account.  Jones rated as poor in UZR and DRS, which are definitely not perfect, but it hardly helps his case.  For the less sabermetrically-inclined, the reaction of Orioles fans was that of shock as well since Jones seemed to develop a rep for botching routine plays this season.  This is why nobody respects Gold Gloves anymore.  This isn't me being a homer either, I would've had no problem if Austin Jackson had won the award as he is a truly great defender as well.

The Story: Ervin Santana has hired a new agent.

The Monkey Says: This may mean nothing, but that sure is the kind of move a player makes when he is expecting his club option to get declined.  Ervin is actually going back to the agency that he fired back in July thus proving that even off the field he is wildly inconsistent.

The Story: Expect the Angels to start trading soon.

The Monkey Says: That appears to be based entirely on two sources thinking they will act quickly with Haren and Santana.  So, perhaps maybe lower your expectations.  It is worth noting though that Santana's option must be decided upon today, but Haren has until Friday.

The Story: Jerry Dipoto claims that picking up the options on Haren and/or Santana is still a possibility.

The Monkey Says: See, this is where I would be a lousy GM.  I could never give obfuscating answers to questions that I very clearly know the real answer too.  I understand it is to maintain leverage, but it also rings as disingenuous.

The Story: A preview of the Angels options in free agency.

The Monkey Says: I totally forgot about Matt Garza when I did my starting pitcher preview.  I think I kind of love that idea.

Awwww, man! I clicked on Bloguin's/MWaH's Brad Sherman banner hoping it would lead me to the YouTube video of Sherman and Berman going toe-to-toe at Pierce JC. Two old guys doing Greco-Roman wrestling never gets old. What a disappointment!

Two names, which may or may not have been interesting to the Angels, are off the free agent list as Brandon League and Jake Peavey re-signed with their teams yesterday. With a roster and farm system like the Angels have trading sounds silly at first but I wonder if the D-Rays might have an interest in Morales to fill the hole at first. Some lesser starting pitcher might suffice or it could be the starting point for David Price. And Matt Garza would certainly do. OK, maybe not "certain"; I'd have thought Dan Haren was "certain" last season, too. On the other hand, maybe $15MM for him on a one year deal might not be so bad if the other options don't look good and you don't have the bodies or the right trade partner to work with. "There are no bad one year deals."

 @Rick K.

 I would be very content to take a one year on ol Danny and see if his health works out. I def think he has earned it and don't see many better options out there. The rotation is sort of stuck between spending big money to do any improving or trying to rebuild with no viable pieces. The in between option is to just throw any old journeyman out there and if that is the case, it may as well be a dedicated vet like Haren.
