The Story: C.J. Wilson will undergo elbow surgery on October 23rd.
The Monkey Says: The operation is supposed to be short, which is good. What isn't good is that this apparently is the second time Wilson will be having the procedure. While it is not a major issue, it can't make the Halos feel good that this might be some kind of chronic condition that could crop up again during the remaining four years of his contract. But pitchers in their thirties only get healthier with age, right? Right? Guys? Hellooooo?
The Story: The Angels are prepping for the start of the Arizona Fall League.
The Monkey Says: The link goes to a quick breakdown of the Halos that will be participating. The only change from the previously announced roster is that Bobby Cassevah is taking Nick Maronde's spot since Maronde got plenty of work in the majors in September whereas Cassevah, while a non-prospect, might still be salveageable if he can fix his control issues and the AFL seems like a good place for him to do that. The real names to watch here though are Kaleb Cowart and Randal Grichuk as both are on the rise hitters but will be tested by the better competition in the AFL compared to the California League.
The Story: Should the Angels pursue Josh Hamilton in free agency?
The Monkey Says: My vote is an emphatic "no," which is interesting but ultimately inconsequential because who the hell am I? Anyway, it is an idea that is out there, but I really don't see it happening. The Angel lineup is working well and bringing in Hamilton, which would certainly come at the cost of Torii Hunter, could mess with something that really isn't broken. The bigger issues though are his highly concerning struggles in the final months of the season and the mental battles he fought throughout the season, not to mention his addicition issues. Whoever signs Hamilton is taking a HUGE risk and I just don't see the Angels feeling like they need to take such a gamble.

Oh, and watching the box scores Friday night I felt like I was watching part of an Angels game. Saunders, 5.2 innings (and the meaningful win no one thought he'd get), O'Day, 2 innings...
And is it just me or do several of the Angels listed in that post seem a little old for their relative minor league level? Are we talking cannon fodder here? I mean, I could understand if they were the college guys who got drafted this year but it seems like nobody will confuse them for actual prospects. BTW, did Luis Jimenez kill somebody or something? This guy has been put in the "persona non grata" category, I guess.
The Angels should not sign Hamilton. On the other hand, who will be the new "Mr. Glass" if the Angels let Izturis go? On the other hand, should the Angels keep Izturis, who obviously hurt his value in two of the past three years and was only average in the middle year, over promoting Romine to the utility role?
