Enough with this Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow gimmick already. I know I coined the term, but it was supposed to be a joke. Now it is going from a joke to a punchline.
How did the Angels go from a week where they could've been 7-0 to 3-4? The Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow.
How do you blow four saves in a week? The Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow.
How do lose four games without a single starter taking a loss? The Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow.
How do you make Kevin Jepsen a linchpin to the late inning? The Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow.
Yeah, it really isn't even a funny punchline either, unless you are a Rangers or Athletics fan, I assume. All I know is this needs to stop. I'm sure it will stop quite simply because no bullpen can possibly be this bad on a daily basis. It is just unsustainable, so I guess we have that to look forward too... yay.
- As if the bullpen woes weren't enough of a call back to the Angels' wretched month of April, the baserunning idiocy has returned too. For the second consecutive game, an Angels hitter, this time Torii Hunter, drove in the go-ahead run but got thrown out to end the inning and any chance at insurance runs (boy, wouldn't those be nice?) trying to take second base while paying absolutely no heed to whether or not the outfielder hit the cut-off man. Trumbo getting doubled off in the eighth inning was just the cherry on top.
- In some good news, and yes there is good news, Dan Haren looked pretty strong, which is a relief given that his back had flared up again. He wasn't perfect and, more importantly, wasn't as efficient as normal, but we can probably let out half a sigh of relief now. We can let the other half out if he wakes up tomorrow without any pain, tightness or soreness in his back.
- After Izturis GIDP'd in the sixth inning, all I could think is thank goodness Erick Aybar comes back on Monday. Given the kind of season Aybar is having, that is a pretty damning comment.
- That go-ahead homer by Pierzynski (of all people) was a very nice reminder that Jerry Dipoto's lone misstep this season is that he never did deliver that extra left-handed reliever we heard so much about. Really could've used someone like that right there. Yup. Would've been nice.
Two blown saves and two losses in a week. That's impressive stuff Izzy. Next time you decide to come out of semi-retirement, be sure to lose Jerry Dipoto's number.
