With the roster more or less set for the Angels, it is time to focus on some more detailed issues, like how said roster is going to fit together. There may not be a more pressing issue than what to do with Mark Trumbo. Specifically, can the big man handle a transition from first base to third base?
Scouts seem to think the Angels would be better off sticking a pole in the ground by third and hoping a ball hits it.
Sabermetricians like ESPN's Mark Simon believe they have statistical evidence that shows that Trumbo will not only fail to suck at third base, but even possibly be something of a defensive asset.
And the Angels must think it is a good idea otherwise they wouldn't be giving it a try in the first place, right?
Me, I just want to see Trumbo give it a go. If it works out, great, because his power bat gets to stay in the lineup. If it doesn't, it figures to be such an epic catastrophe that I am considering buying an external hard drive for my DVR so that I can store all the blooper reel videos in perpetuity.
Surely it means something that when I searched Google for a picture of Trumbo fielding to use in this post, I had to go to the third page of results to find one, no?
The thing about it is nobody knows what to expect, not even Trumbo himself. As such, I see no other option than to crowdsource this conundrum, so have at it MWaHers (oh, by the way, I am trying to think of a nickname for the loyal readers of this blog, MWaHers is terrible but everything else I come up with is based on the word "monkey" and sounds mildly racist and/or sexual, somebody give me a better idea).
Place your vote in the poll after the jump.

You want a nickname? MWAH! Isn't that like a big kiss? Maybe we're big Kissers. Maulers? M(w)aulers? M(w)ahlers? Use that 'L' as ... well, there is an 'L' after the 'H' in Halos. That might work, eh?
Anyway, these youngsters (fresh minor leaguers) are popping up in the Angels system and they are very good players. This will be quite a situation beginning this year. Too many good minor leaguers who have earned their rights to belong in the Angels'organization, wouldn't you say? Now Pujols is an Angel. Morales should be back this season. We have Trumbo; Abreu is still a positive influence. Wells will probably have a break-out season. Get himself back to his old self. Hunter is getting older, but he can turn up the switch, I'm sure. With the Pitching we'll have and the players we have, this better be the year the Angels take it all. Let's hope the Bull Pen is worthy. 2nd Base and SS are too good to send away.
From what I understand, when Trumbo was drafted he was equally as useless defensively at 3B as 1B, so they moved im to 1B because you can usually get away with hiding poor defenders there. What never changed is that Trumbo has a rocket for an arm and moves very well for such a big guy. That's what caused the Angels to start sticking him in RF and Lf the past couple of seasons. From what I understand, he's acceptable out there and I expect something similar at 3B. He will never be "good" and the chances of him being average are slim. But tons of team gets away with having a below average 3B (Texas in 2010, The Mets in 2010,2011, the Cubs for the pat 3 years, the Red Sox in 2011.
That seems to be the general trend right now. You can afford to have a below average defensive 3B as long as he hits the crap out of the ball. And Mark Trumbo is certainly capable of that. Plus Trumbo wouldn't be the everyday 3B, more like 50 games there, 20 at 1B, another 20 at DH and 20 in the OF. Having 110 games of Trumbo along with 150+ of Pujols and hopefully Morales will give this lineup more power than I remember them ever having.
If Bobby Bonilla could play third base ... (That's my answer.) Also, I like Monks or H-Monks as a moniker.
@ScottyAllenLAAI Trumbo was one of the highest ranking first baseman in the category of runs saved. He actually was very good at back handing ground balls that went towards the hole. That is something that may factor in well playing 3B; his ability to back hand well could save a lot of doubles. Off balance throws are the one thing I think he will have to really focus on during his transition.
@lbprguy I'm thinking maybe of merging monkey and Halos into one word: Monkalos. Has an ICP feel to it, not sure if that is good or bad.
